Off topic question: Would you consider a backup set of take off wheelset from a 2018 Stach 9.7 a deal at $200? Hubs aside, do you think you're likely to bang up a wheelset with a 3.0 tire at 18lbs psi? No downhill in my future. I think I can afford a dropper seatpost with the savings. If the 2019 Stache 5 went back to the 2017 geometry, I feel like I have the same bike for $790 less. No buyers remorese because I feel I got a solid deal at 30% off for a 2017. All that I can see different between 20 are the dropper post and this small geometry change? It appears the extra length also raised the Stack 9mm. Would a 2018 have been worth the extra $250. While reading yesterday, I too was confused by the 2019 geometry being the same on Trek's website as 2017. I'd seen a youtube review that mentioned the change in geometry in 2018. The world of wheel sizes and widths is no longer simple, not only do we now have three standard wheel sizes, the advent of plus sized tyres and fat bikes have given us a multitude of wheel and tyre options. I do wonder whether the 2018 model's 15mm longer reach and wheelbase would make a material difference? I'm 5'4" and picked up a 15.5in model. 2017 Stache 9.8 Model 538401 Retailer prices may vary. The price difference was only $80 more for the Stache 5 vs the Roscoe 6. It features a revised geometry for 2017 with even shorter chainstays than before, thanks to both Boost spacing and its now classic elevated driveside chainstay. The stock bike is built with 29+ tires and a carbon wheelset, but you can also fit 27.5. ![]() The Stache 5 felt lighter, and more responsive. I would consider selling the entire bike for around $1,500 but the current plan is just the frame.I picked up a 2017 Stache 5 today after a Roscoe 6 test ride Monday, and the Stache 5 Tuesday. Trek started in a small Wisconsin barn in 1976, but our founders always saw something bigger. I want to utilize the parts to build up another slack trail hardtail that is ideal for single speeding. I will include the the BB and the headset and possibly the Bontrager dropper seat post. It can be set-up for a single speed but it's better as a geared bike. It also has a plastic skid guard on the down tube, complete internal routing, and the stranglehold dropout system which allows you to adjust the wheelbase to make the bike a little more stable or make steering a bit faster. It is really ideal if you need to do some substantial climbing but will be doing super-technical stuff along the way. I took this down bike park trails and it was awesome but it was perfect for long rides in very harsh conditions. FOR SALE Up for sale is a Used Trek Stache 9.8 Frame with low miles. This frame is still fully functional, but it was my choice when I decided to ride very technical chunky stuff so there are dings and scratches but nothing compromising the function. This is my third mountain bike in the stable, so I didn't not ride it often. We take a look at Zach Shriver’s all carbon, 29+ trail slayer, the Trek Stache 9.8. This bike is really so much fun, I hate to let it go, but it is not ideal as a single speed due to the chain stay configuration, and that's what I do. ![]() I am looking to sell my Trek Stache 9.8 Carbon XL hardtail frame that can handle 3.0 plus tires.
